Atul Punj was the Chairman of Punj Lloyd, a diversified conglomerate and the second largest company in India, providing engineering and construction services in Energy and Infrastructure, with interests in upstream and defence sectors. Headquartered in India, Punj Lloyd was an over US$ 1.12 billion organisation with operations spread across the Middle East, the Caspian, Asia Pacific, Africa, South Asia, China and Europe.

Atul Punj’s global vision for the Group led him to cross boundaries and establish international offices in 23 countries and gain project experience worldwide. The 8540 strong multicultural workforce underlined his focused approach to harness diversity within the organisation. As many as 37 nationalities formed an integral part of the workforce at the company’s various project locations.

It was Atul Punj’s entrepreneurial skills and foresight that resulted in the acquisition of SembCorp E&C in 2006, later called Sembawang Engineers and Constructors Pte. Ltd., one of the largest construction companies of Singapore. His thrust on operations in Singapore resulted in Punj Lloyd winning the India Enterprise Award from the Singapore Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry for making significant contributions to and a positive impact on Singapore's socio-economic development. Atul Punj was also the first to invest in Global Health’s Medanta, the largest multi-speciality medical institute of India, becoming the harbinger of medical tourism in India. Investments in Airworks saw it grow to become a global business. Atul Punj was the Founder Chairman of Samena Capital, a premier investment group focused on principal investments in the Subcontinent, Asia, Middle East and North Africa (collectively known as the SAMENA region).

The corporate social responsibility initiatives resulted in a large volume of work in community enrichment. His focus on Sitamarhi, a backward village in Uttar Pradesh has seen a phenomenal development of the region with villagers having access to quality education, healthcare and other facilities. Dayawanti Punj Model School, a co-educational school affiliated with CBSE, provides quality education to over 1400 children every year. For the economic development of the youth, a vocational training centre was introduced with participation of over 1200 men and women. He was also instrumental in setting up of the ‘Punj Lloyd Institute of Infrastructure’ at the new Indian School of Business (ISB) campus at Mohali, in partnership with MIT, Sloan School of Management. His work on prevention of HIV/AIDS in the vulnerable migrant worker community has earned a lot of goodwill for Punj Lloyd, raising the bar for the living standards of workers, the mainstay of the construction industry.

Atul Punj was awarded the Ernst & Young 'Entrepreneur of the Year 2007' in the Infrastructure & Construction category. CNBC TV 18 conferred the ‘First Generation Entrepreneur of the Year’ award to Atul Punj. Under his focus on quality construction, Punj Lloyd was presented the award for ‘Excellence in Infrastructure’ by the Economic Times in 2014. The Group was globally listed in ENR Ranking of Top 225 International Contractors, Top 225 Global Contractors and Top 200 Design Firms, every year.

Atul Punj is based in New Delhi and is actively involved with many trade bodies. With his exhaustive experience of global geographies and energy businesses, Atul Punj was the President of International Pipe Line and Offshore Contractors Association (IPLOCA), headquartered in Switzerland from 2015-2016.
